EVANDER KANE IS IN TROUBLE AGAIN

AUG 24, 2021  (20H14)      ALEXANDRE DESROSIERS
San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane is still in trouble. A federal bankruptcy judge has given the green light in a lawsuit filed by Hope Parker, who alleges Kane reneged on a promise to pay her at least $2 million if she aborted their pregnancy.

Parker originally filed a lawsuit in 2018 in a California court seeking testimony from Kane, but Kane says he changed his mind about paying Parker before she sent him proof of the abortion. That argument did absolutely nothing to sway Bankruptcy Judge Stephen Johnson.

"Plaintiff (Parker) was not willing to terminate her third pregnancy until defendant (Kane) offered her $2 million to $3 million to do so," Johnson wrote.

According to bankruptcy court documents, Parker had allegedly had two previous abortions, and Kane paid her $125,000 for the second abortion.

"Then, on June 13, 2018, the plaintiff sent the defendant a text message of her lab results, which confirmed that she had terminated the third pregnancy. When Plaintiff asked Defendant to update her on the status of her payment, Defendant, for the first time, told (Plaintiff) that he was not going to pay her, stating: I'm going to have my attorney contact you I'm not dealing with this anymore then."

"I can infer from the complaint that the plaintiff falsely said he would pay (...) to abort the third pregnancy, and that he did so to deceive her into actually having that abortion."

Parker's case has been delayed due to COVID-19, and she is currently still in the bankruptcy process.

"To use a boxing analogy, this is the first round of this litigation," said Schuyler Carroll, a bankruptcy attorney at Loeb & Loeb. "There are still nine rounds to go. Parker won this round, but she still has a long way to go. That said, since a large portion of bankruptcies are resolved by settlement, a decision like this often leads to settlement discussions."

In short, a very complex story that has more than enough to talk about.
