AHL BELIEVED TO HAVE DECIDED ON 2020-21 SEASON START DATE

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the AHL is targeting a February 5 start date. He went on to mention that the Board of Governors approved that decision today.

Obviously, the normal start date for the AHL, like almost every other hockey league, is in October. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has changed things dramatically. As of now, the NHL has yet to decide their start date, though it wouldn’t be surprising to see them follow suit with the AHL. While there was talk that they could start their season as soon as December, it does not seem likely given that December is now just a month away, as well as the fact that the Stanley Cup Playoffs only ended on September 28.

If the NHL does do the same as the AHL, it will almost surely mean that the regular season will be shorter than its usual 82 game season, although how much shorter is unknown. Unfortunately, regardless of the start date, it seems very unlikely that fans will be in buildings for the 2020-21 season, a least for the beginning of it.
