AHL'S CALDER CUP WILL NOT BE AWARDED THIS SEASON

According to The Athletic's Michael Russo, the Calder Cup will not be awarded in the AHL for the 2020-21 season.

The Calder Cup is normally given out to the winner of the AHL at the end of every seasons playoffs, like the Stanley Cup in the NHL. Unfortunately, due to problems caused by the pandemic, it will not be awarded for a second straight year, Russo reports. Instead, the top four teams in each division will play best of threes for a division championship. He also reported that the playoffs will last just one week.

This is very disappointing, given that teams in all sports compete with the goal being to win a league championship.

Still, given how things were looking just a few months ago, the fact the AHL will have a season at all is exciting news. Barring any setbacks, the league is set to begin on February 5, though this year will include just 28 teams rather than the usual 31, as the Charlotte Checkers, Milwaukee Admirals, and Springfield Falcons have all elected to opt out of the 2020-21 season. All three will return for the 2021-22 campaign.
