ALEC MILLS THROWS NO HITTER AGAINST BREWERS

Alec Mills, today’s starter for the Chicago Cubs, has just thrown the second no hitter of the season. Unless you are a die hard Cubs fan, you probably don’t recognize this name. Don’t feel bad though, because the young righty has never appeared in more than 9 games in a season and has never pitched more than 36 innings until this season. In four seasons, three with the Cubs and one with the Royals, Mills has pitched in just 27 games.

He had just one complete game before this, in 2015 with the Royals A+ minor league team. He never threw more than six innings in a Major League game before, and those were both this season when he pitched seven innings. Now, he stands in the record books in multiple ways. He is the third pitcher to throw a no hitter on September 13th, the other two were Dazzy Vance for the Dodgers in 1925 and Hugh Daily for the Cleveland Blues in 1883.

With his no hitter, it is the first time a Cubs pitcher and White Sox pitcher both threw no hitters in the same season. Lucas Giolito struck out 13 batters in his, while Mills struck out just five, the fewest in a Cubs no hitter since 1969. Mills threw the 16th no-no in Cubs franchise history, and the first for the franchise since Jake Arrieta threw one in 2016.
