ALEX PIETRANGELO COMMENTS ON LACK OF DISCUSSION WITH BLUES; CALLS IT 'DISAPPOINTING'

Unrestricted free agent and perennial Norris Trophy candidate Alex Pietrangelo has stated he wants to remain a member of the St. Louis Blues. However, time is running out to do that and, in the latest update, he said there has been very little progress.

"You sit back last summer and you think about where the situation is at, especially after coming off what we did last year, it came quicker than you expect, getting to this point,” Pietrangelo told The Athletic.

“It’s been a little disappointing that we haven’t been able to get a deal done, obviously,” Pietrangelo added. “But this is the situation that we’re in, we’re over three weeks away from Oct. 9 (the opening of free agency). There hasn’t been a whole lot of discussion where things are at. We’ll see if things pick up here shortly. There hasn’t been much in terms of progress. But at the same time, I guess anything can happen, over the next couple of weeks when it comes down to crunch time when a free agent starts to look forward knowing Oct. 9 is just a couple of weeks away.”

Pietrangelo, 30, is coming off a seven year contract that paid him $6.5 million per season (AAV). St. Louis has a bit of an advantage as they are the only team that can offer him eight years. However, the Blues do not have a lot of wiggle room when it comes to the salary cap and Pietrangelo is likely looking for a raise for what may be his last contract, or at least his last long-term one.

"Obviously, I want to stay a Blue. Of course I do," Pietrangelo said in a recent interview with NHL.com.
