COYOTES RE-SIGN GOALTENDER

Today, Arizona Coyotes interim general manager Steve Sullivan announced that the team has re-signed goaltender Adin Hill to a 1-year, 1-way contract. Financial details were not released. Hill was set to be an RFA this off-season.

Hill, 24, split the 2019-20 season between the Coyotes and their AHL affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners. In 13 games with the Coyotes, Hill put up a record of 2 wins, 4 losses, 3 overtime/shootout losses, a 2.62 GAA, and a .918 save percentage. In 20 games with the Roadrunners he posted a record of 15 wins, 5 losses, 0 overtime/shootout losses, a 2.40 GAA, a .918 save percentage, and two shutouts.

Hill was drafted 76th overall in the 2015 NHL entry draft by the Coyotes. In 30 career NHL games, he has a record of 10 wins, 12 losses, 3 overtime/shootout losses, a 2.81 GAA, a .907 save percentage, and one shutout.

The move is certainly an interesting one to say the least. Going into the 2020-21 season, the Coyotes now have three goaltenders signed to one-way contracts, Antti Raanta, Darcy Kuemper, and Adin Hill. Could this mean that Raanta or Kuemper are on their way out of Arizona?

With the Coyotes losing a 2020 second round pick, and a 2021 first round pick due to the fitness testing scandal, they would more than likely want to recoup some draft picks, and trading Raanta or Kuemper could help that cause. In the 2020 and 2021 NHL drafts the Coyotes have 9, possibly 10 picks. In the 2020 draft they don't have a first, second or third round pick, and in 2021 their second or third round pick is dependant on Taylor Hall re-signing (Arizona's second round pick could go to New Jersey if he re-signs, if he doesn't re-sign, the Devils get Arizona's third round pick in 2021).

Only time will tell what the Coyotes will do, but it certainly seems like they have a goaltending dilemma they need to address very soon.
