FATHER JOINS SON IN WINNIPEG

It appears a long time NHLer will return to the league to coach after taking a one-year break to coach in the WHL. According to Elliotte Friedman, the Winnipeg Jets are hiring Dave Lowry as an assistant coach. Dave's son, Adam, plays for the Jets, and it will be interesting to see the coach to player dynamic between a father and son.

"Dave brings a tremendous amount of experience to our coaching staff in a variety of different areas," said Paul Maurice, head coach. "First of all, his success working with young players in their development can't be denied, as he had an excellent season last year in Brandon and has coached the country's top junior players. He has worked in all aspects of special teams during his time as an NHL assistant coach, and in fact was part of a Los Angeles Kings team that saw a dramatic improvement of 25 goals at 5-on-5 in his first year there. We're very excited to bring Dave on board and join our staff."

Lowry, 55, spent 19 years playing in the National Hockey League. He played for Vancouver, St. Louis, Florida, San Jose, and Calgary. In his first two seasons with the Flames, Lowry was captain of the team.

He was drafted in the 6th round, 110th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1983 NHL entry draft. In 1,084 regular season games, Lowry had 351 points (164 G, 187 A), 1,191 penalty minutes, and was a -90. In 111 career playoff games, he put up 36 points (16 G, 20 A), 181 penalty minutes, and was -12.

His final NHL season was in 2003-04, where he was a part of the Calgary Flames as they made a run to the Stanley Cup Final. Following a one-year break from hockey, which also was the year of the NHL lockout (2004-05), Lowry decided to take up coaching. He started off his coaching career with a four-season stint as an assistant coach (2 years), associate coach (1 year), and head coach (1 year), with the Calgary Hitman in the Western Hockey League. Ahead of the 2009-10 season, Lowry was named an assistant coach for the Calgary Flames, where he also spent four seasons.

Lowry then returned to the WHL, where he was named head coach of the Victoria Royals. He spent five seasons as the bench boss for the Royals, winning the WHL coach of the year award twice (2013-14; 2015-16). After his time with Victoria, he went on to be an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Kings for a couple of seasons, before returning to the WHL once again. Prior to the 2019-20 season, Lowry was named head coach of the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Internationally, Lowry has coached Canada on a couple of occasions. He was an assistant coach at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships, where Canada won the gold medal and finished with a perfect, 7-0 record. Lowry was then named head coach ahead of the 2016 World Juniors, but Canada failed to medal as they placed sixth following a 6-5 loss to Finland in the quarter-finals.
