FINNISH REPORT STATES WHEELER, SCHEIFELE WERE MAJOR REASONS PATRIK LAINE WANTED OUT OF WINNIPEG

Former 2nd overall pick Patrik Laine's time in Winnipeg was marked with highs and lows to say the least. Laine is obviously a player loaded with talent, but for whatever reason, seemed disinterested in playing for the Jets, and his trade requests were well-documented. Now that he's been traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets, a report out of his home country of Finland claims Winnipeg captain Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele were major forces behind Laine's unrest.

According to the report by Iltalehti.fi, "Wheeler felt his position on the right side of the No. 1 line was threatened because Laine was originally the right winger. Wheeler was also not enthusiastic that Laine would become a young man who would become almost as popular in Winnipeg as Teemu Selänne."

"Scheifele, who was on the team captain's leash, made it clear to everyone that he wanted to play with Wheeler," the report continued.

"Wheeler and Scheifele threw sand at Laine's skates in almost every possible way. Wheeler in particular was a master at speaking behind the back of the young Finnish man for things he certainly did not want in public."

Iltalehti also blamed Jets' coach Paul Maurice for not standing up to Wheeler and Scheifele.

"Jets head coach Paul Maurice was too weak to defy Wheeler and Scheife. Maurice let and continues to let Wheeler and Scheifele lead the team."

It's worth noting that Iltalehti is a Finnish publication known for being in the corner of Laine, for obvious reasons. That said, Wheeler admitted himself after the Laine trade that he could have handled the situation better.

"Maybe I could have communicated a little better instead of being frustrated," Wheeler said.

In an interview with Iltalehti in 2019, Laine stated that he felt in most other NHL clubs he would be playing with the team's best players.
