CAPS COACH SHEDS LIGHT ON TEAM'S PROTOCOL SITUATION, HOW MUCH TIME PLAYERS WILL MISS

Wednesday night, the Washington Capitals became the first NHL team to be fined by the league for not following COVID-19 protocols. The move cost the Caps $100,000, but more importantly, the team is now missing four players, including some star power, who have been place in COVID-related protocol absence. Those players are Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, Alexander Ovechkin and Ilya Samsonov.

According to Washington head coach Peter Laviolette, there was a positive test among Caps' players and the league did contact tracing, leading the quarantine for the four players. He believes they will miss the next four games, which is a tough blow considering the shortened season.

"We totally understand why the rules are in place and there's no arguing with that. We want to be compliant," said Laviolette. "We made a mistake and we need to do a better job."

"We knew the rules," he continued. "We're not sitting here saying that we were uninformed or we weren't aware. We need to do a better job."

Ovechkin, in a statement he made following the fine, admitted that the four players had spent some time in a hotel room together while on the road.

"I regret my choice to spend time together with my teammates in our hotel room and away from the locker room areas. I will learn from this experience," said Ovechkin.

Meanwhile, the Capitals have called up veteran goaltender Craig Anderson to the team's main roster from the taxi squad to replace Samsonov. Forward Connor McMichael has been added to the team's taxi squad and can be called up if needed.

On top of all this, Alexander Ovechkin's wife took to social media and blasted the league for putting him and his three friends in COVID protocol, indicating it wouldn't have happened if they weren't Russian. She also stated Ovehckin has COVID antibodies. You can read that full story here.
