IIHF AXES REDUCTION OF SUSPENSION FOR PLAYERS IN MATCH-FIXING SCANDAL

The International Ice Hockey Federation has said a firm no to a ruling that would have reduced the suspension of seven players involved in a match-fixing incident. The latest ruling stems from a game in the Belarusian Extraliga Championship when Mogilyov defeated Dynamo Molodechno 6-5 in November of 2019.

In all, seven players were suspended from the participation in all competitions or activities organized by the IIHF from July 2, 2020 until June 30, 2022 and all competitions authorized or organized by IIHF Member National Associations and their members, leagues and/or clubs until May 31, 2021. The Belarusian Ice Hockey Association recently attempted to reduce the suspensions, saying activities the players were taking part in - like organizing training sessions for young players, promoting and popularizing the sport of ice hockey, giving anti-doping information at schools, etc. - was evidence and proof that the players regretted their unlawful actions. The IIHF does not agree, saying those actions are "usual and necessary attempts to regain confidence and trust in their integrity and loyalty as persons and ice hockey players."

During an investigation into the game in 2019, each of the players admitted that they had agreed to "exert an unlawful influence on the outcome of the game in exchange for illegal remuneration." Essentially, they were paid in advance to determine the outcome of the game.

The IIHF said its latest decision on the suspensions is final and the matter is now closed. The seven players involved in the scandal are Pavel Boyarchuk (Belarus), Stanislav Kuchkin (Russia), Vyacheslav Lisichkin (Belarus), Alexei Ivanov (Russia), Nikita Ustinenko (Belarus), Sergei Sheleg (Belarus), and Alexander Syrei (Belarus).
