JACK EICHEL HAPPY WITH DIRECTION OF THE SABRES

Buffalo Sabres forward Jack Eichel, who has expressed disappointment this past year with his team, appears to be much happier with the state of the organization after a busy offseason.

“We’re really excited,” Eichel said Tuesday to NHL.com’s Mike Zeisberger. “They’re great moves from management in the offseason. Now, more than anything at this point, you want to get back to playing."

“I think it’s great. I think it definitely sparked some excitement in me and other guys in the room.”

The Sabres have had a tough decade, as they have failed to qualify for the postseason since 2010-2011. However, they appear to be turning things around. The first move in the right direction was firing former general manager Jason Botterill and replacing him with Kevyn Adams. Then came free agency, where Adams was able to sign former Hart Trophy winner Taylor Hall to a one-year contract, while also bringing in Eric Staal and Cody Eakin.

“Whenever you can add people like Taylor Hall and Eric Staal and Cody Eakin to your roster and the locker room, they not only bring talent to the ice but also (a) veteran presence,” Eichel said. “In a situation like ours where we’re trying to find a winning culture with a young group and trying to figure out the right way to do things at times, I think having older guys can help you out, especially during periods of adversity.”

Adding Hall will be a huge bonus for Eichel, who desperately needs help carrying the load offensively. Last season, Eichel put up 36 goals which were a career high, along with 78 points in just 68 games. Unfortunately, the next leading scorer on the Sabres, Sam Reinhart, had just 50 points. It remains to be seen whether these offseason acquisitions will get Buffalo back into the playoffs, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.
