JOHN TORTORELLA DENIES BENCHING DUBOIS, DOMI

Columbus Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella told reporters Monday evening that he did not bench Pierre-Luc Dubois, despite the team's top centre playing getting just one short shift in the final seven minutes of the 2nd period of a 3-2 a win over the Detroit Red Wings.

"You guys are really dissecting this benching and sitting," said Tortorella when asked whyy Dubois wasn't taking regular shifts. "I guess I benched Max [Domi] the other night, you said. Slow down, boys. You'll know when I bench someone. I have to make decisions when the game is being played, when I think someone is going at certain times. But don't try to manifest something as far as the benching. That's all part of a three-period hockey game."

Domi didn't hit the ice for the final almost six minutes of the Blue Jackets 3-1 loss to Nashville last Thursday. Domi also sat for quite a bit of the final 10 minutes of the third period of Monday's game against Detroit, getting just 14:34 of ice time for the entire game. Tortorella was asked after the first game whether he had talked to Domi about his play, to which he replied "nope." Dubois said Monday he had also not talked to "Torts."

"No, he didn't say anything. It's just stuff that happens. Other guys are playing well," Dubois said, who did have a goal in the game which came after he sat for seven minutes.

There are plenty of mixed feelings regarding Tortorella among hockey fans. Some see him as an old-school style leader who gets the job done. Others see him as a hot head who is could be pushing away players. A common thread among the Blue Jackets the last couple of years is high-profile players leaving or seemingly wanting to leave. Sergei Bobrovsky and Artemi Panarin made it very clear they would not be re-signing in Columbus when they became free agents in 2019. Josh Anderson seemed thrilled to be traded to the Montreal Canadiens, almost immediately agreeing to a new seven-year contract. And, of course, Dubois and Columbus have both made it clear that he's asked for a trade. While no one has said it publicly, it's hard not to wonder whether Tortorella might be one of the reasons behind this.
