LEAFS ANNOUNCE THE DEPARTURE OF TWO ASSISTANT COACHES

Since Toronto's early exit from the bubble in their own back yard, there has been much speculation as to what the plan might be heading into their offseason. Some have called for a "less than engaged" Mitch Marner to be traded for a top pairing defenseman, others have latched on to Nick Kypreos' theory that we might see a Freddie Andersen for Matt Murray trade between the Leafs and the Pens.

While we don't yet know what to expect in terms of on-ice personnel changes, we do know for sure that there will be some new faces behind the bench in Toronto in the first official full season with Sheldon Keefe as the Buds' bench boss, as we found out on Friday.

According to the Leafs' official PR Twitter page, a pair of assistant coaches in Paul McFarland and Andrew Brewer will not be with the team next season.

McFarland has accepted an offer from the OHL's Kingston Frontenacs to return as the team's head coach after spending three seasons as an NHL assistant coach, two with the Florida Panthers, and last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. McFarland had been the head coach in Kingston for three seasons prior to landing in Florida.

Brewer, on the other hand, has been with the Leafs in an assistant coach capacity since 2015-16 after spending one season as the Detroit Red Wings video coach. Brewer was due a contract renewal that the Leafs have decided to opt out of.

Both McFarland and Brewer were hired during Babcock's stint as the Leafs head coach. With Keefe now running the show behind the bench, it only makes sense that the changes would start with Keefe being able to help select who his assistants will be moving forward.

Thus far, no potential candidates have been identified, but I suspect we may see a few promotions from within the organization, likely coming from the AHL Toronto Marlies, with whom Keefe won a Calder Cup in 2017-18.
