LEAFS EXTEND RFA DEFENSEMAN TRAVIS DERMOTT

The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced that they have come to terms on a one-year pact with RFA defenseman Travis Dermott on Friday, effectively resolving the last significant piece of business needing to be addressed ahead of the 2020-21 season.

Dermott, 23, will earn $874,125 for the 2020-21 season, just a slight increase over the $863,333 salary that he earned last season, the final of his entry-level contract.

The feisty, puck-moving blueliner has been limited to just 41 points in 157 career NHL games, playing primarily bottom pairing minutes for the Leafs over parts of the last three seasons.

With Dermott having officially put pen to paper, the Leafs now have a full 23-man roster inked for the upcoming season, but will have to clear about $1M in salary to become cap compliant. This will be easily accomplished by sending a player or two to the AHL Marlies and running with a 21/22-man roster, as Leafs GM Kyle Dubas had recently suggested that the team would do.

The newly-acquired Joey Anderson is the last remaining RFA on the roster, but is likely to accept his qualifying offer and begin the season in the AHL.
