LEAFS LOSE A KEY PLAYER IN LOSS TO OILERS

The Maple Leafs came up on the wrong end of a 3-1 decision at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday in an uncharacteristically lackluster game from both clubs.

The fact that the Leafs put together a losing effort in a very winnable game can certainly be chalked up to a lost opportunity. And, while we're on the subject of loss, the Leafs have also lost a huge piece up front in "Jumbo" Joe Thornton, who went down with an injury during the third period of the contest after taking a hit from Oilers forward Josh Archibald.

Thornton seemed to favor his ribs on his left side following the hit, which the 41-year-old was not anticipating.

Following the contest, Leafs bench boss Sheldon Keefe stated during the post-game media scrum that Thornton looks like he's definitely going to miss time for the Buds, but that an update on his condition will not be available until further imaging and testing are done.

Thornton had been playing on the top line alongside Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner this season, though the injury occurred while playing a shift down the lineup with Alexander Kerfoot and Jimmy Vesey.
