LEAFS SEND FORMER 3RD ROUND PICK OVERSEAS TO LOG SOME TIME IN THE KHL

With the uncertainty surrounding the AHL's 2020-21 season, the majority of NHL GM's have loaned prospects to various leagues around Europe to ensure play time and continued development for tomorrow's assets. On Monday, the Maple Leafs announced that they are sending another promising young player overseas to get his legs moving.

Per the Leafs' official PR Twitter account, the club made public the loan of former 3rd round draft pick Semyon Der-Arguchintsev to Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod of the KHL.

The diminutive forward was selected with the 76th overall pick that the Leafs acquired in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, when they traded down four spots with the St. Louis Blues to nab Swedish defender and top Leafs prospect Rasmus Sandin.

SDA spent his Junior career with the OHL's Peterborough Petes, playing with fellow Leafs prospect Nick Robertson. In 55 games with the Petes last season, Der-Arguchintsev exploded offensively, registering 12 goals and adding 63 assists for 75 points.

There's little doubt that SDA's spike in production is due, at least in part, to Robertson's massive 55-goal, 86-point season - but with Robertson having made the jump to the NHL for the playoffs in 2019-20, and the 2020-21 OHL season in jeopardy due to the pandemic, Leafs GM Kyle Dubas isn't taking any chances with the 20-year-old Russian. Dubas wants SDA to play, and play he shall - albeit in the KHL, at least until training camp begins.
