MCDAVID COMMENTS ON OILERS LACK OF PLAYOFF SUCCESS

While many in Edmonton were frustrated by the Oilers elimination from Stanley Cup Playoff contention at the hands of the Chicago Blackhawks, few felt it like Connor McDavid.

McDavid, along with teammate Leon Draisaitl, finishing first and second in overall points through the 19-20 season, lead the Oilers to the fifth best record in the Western Conference. Promising signs for a team who had missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for twelve of the last thirteen seasons.

Unfortunately, the hopefully season would be cut short, as the Blackhawks would eliminate the Oilers in just four games.

As reported by The Athletic’s Daniel Nugent-Bowman, McDavid spoke on at least one area he believes the team needs to improve on, defense.

“Teams that win are the teams that defend. We haven’t seemed to figure that out yet,” McDavid commented following the Oilers elimination from the Stanley Cup Playoff Qualifiers.

“I thought we took some big steps playing defensively during the season. It just wasn’t there (in the postseason).”

So what’s missing? What’s preventing one of the most explosive offenses in the National Hockey League from postseason success?

“I wish I had an answer for ya.”

“Obviously, we’re missing something. I’m not sure what that is. I’m sure everyone will go back and regroup and try to figure out that exact question.”

Despite having the two highest point scores in the league, Edmonton would finish the regular season with only a +8 goal differential, with just a handful of roster players ending the year with a positive +/- rating.

They also held a -16 goal differential at even strength, a tough number to win with, regardless of offensive output.

The Oilers Captain, while obviously disappointed with missing the postseason yet again, did however end things on a positive note.

“We made some steps. We’ll learn and grow from it.”
