PENGUINS HAVE ANOTHER GOALIE DECISION TO MAKE

It was just three years ago when the Pittsburgh Penguins found themselves in an eerily similar situation as they will be in a year from now. Two starting quality goaltenders, one of which has won multiple Stanley Cups with the team, while the other has shown promising potential to do so in the future. In 2017, the veteran with the rings was Marc-Andre Fleury, while the up and comer was Penguins current #1 Matt Murray. This time around, Murray finds himself in the role of Fleury and 2013 second rounder Tristan Jarry slots into the young goalie with potential role.

With just a year separating the two, it's more about choosing the experienced Murray who has proven himself throughout the past half decade or taking a chance on Jarry who had a much better season this year during the COVID shortened regular season. Murray certainly had a down year this season with a career worst .899 SV%, but was still good enough to post 20 wins in his 38 games started. In comparison, Jarry posted 20 wins in just 33 starts saving .921% of all shots thrown at him, all the more impressive as he only started 29 games previous to this season.

GM Jim Rutherford acknowledges that he has a difficult decision at hand, saying the cap forces him to make a difficult decision. In 2017, one was surely out the door due to only being able to protect a single goaltender per expansion draft rules. This time around, both are restricted free agents and thus, can both be qualifying offered to retain the rights however, it is highly unlikely either goalie accepts the one-year deal at only a slight raise from what they were making last season.

In Pittsburgh's perfect world, both goaltenders re-sign a short term deal and one of the two goes above and beyond to prove himself as the #1 in the 2020-21 season. This would leave an easy choice headed into the 2021 Seattle Expansion Draft, unlike the 2017 Vegas Expansion where many disagreed with Rutherford's pick of leaving Fleury unprotected.
