PENGUINS TRADE VETERAN FORWARD PATRIC HORNQVIST

According to Kevin Weekes, the Pittsburgh Penguins have traded forward Patric Hornqvist to the Florida Panthers in exchange for defenseman Mike Matheson.

The 33-year-old has spent the past 6 seasons with Pittsburgh, and he was a key part in the Penguins winning back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 2016 and 2017.

The veteran forward has recorded 480 points (238 goals, 242 assists) in 770 games in his NHL career. Hornqvist will become a free agent in 2023, and he will make $5.3 million until then.

After rumors of the Penguins being interested in Vancouver Canucks defenseman Chris Tanev, it looks like the Penguins found another defenseman in Mike Matheson. Pittsburgh could still go after Tanev, but it just seems less likely.

Matheson is only 26 years old and is a great addition for the Penguins searching for more balance defensively. The defenseman has tallied 91 points (33 goals, 58 assists) in 299 games. He signed an 8-year, $39 million ($4.875 million per year) extension back in 2017, so he is locked up long term for the Penguins.
