PIERRE MCGUIRE EXPLAINS JUST HOW CLOSE HE WAS TO BECOMING THE GENERAL MANAGER OF TWO NHL TEAMS

Ask hockey fans who their least favorite announcer is and you’ll often hear the same answer: Pierre McGuire. The 59-year-old McGuire rubs many the wrong way due to his quirkiness as well as bringing up many fun facts about players that most find more annoying than interesting.

The polarizing McGuire has had many odd viral moments over the years that can be found all over the internet, as he is someone many hockey fans love to laugh at. Despite being well known as an announcer however, many do not know or simply forget that McGuire was at one point a coach in the NHL, as he was an assistant for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers, and Ottawa Senators over the course of five years. In fact, he actually served as the Whalers head coach for 67 games during the 1993-94 season.

On Thursday, McGuire made an appearance on the well known Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, and admitted that he has come close on a few occasions to working for multiple NHL teams, this time as a general manager.

“I’ll tell you the truth,” McGuire said when asked about being linked to past general manager jobs. “I was the runner up to Marc Bergevin in Montreal and that was heartbreaking. That’s my hometown. But Marc’s done a good job,”

That wasn’t all, as McGuire went on to mention that the Pittsburgh Penguins were also considering bringing him on.

“And the other one… it came down to Jimmy Rutherford and myself for the job (in Pittsburgh) before Jimmy took it. I was really interested in that one.”

For the sake of all hockey fans, it is unfortunate that neither of these teams hired McGuire, as it would have made for some terrific stories regardless of whether or not the teams succeeded. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be, however McGuire’s name still often pops up in rumors regarding teams searching for general managers, so perhaps this could still happen in the future.
