SEMIN WANTS TO 'HEAR OUR FANS AND FEEL THE ATMOSPHERE' AGAIN

Many teams and players have had to adapt to playing without fans in the stands, and it no doubtedly has taken a toll on many organizations. Just like the NHL, the KHL has also been affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. HC Vityaz captain Alexander Semin recently talked about the totally different feeling this season has had.

“No one likes to play without fans on the stands,” Semin admits. “We miss our fans. We play for them. Sometimes, without fans, games look like practices.” Many fans have tried to keep up with their teams either online or through other virtual alternatives, but it is not the same. “Naturally. We don’t forget about them,” the forward explains. “However, we want to hear our fans and feel the atmosphere. Playing in the silence is not what we are used to.” Without fans on the stands, it’s not easy to pump up players for games, which is especially hard for a captain in these circumstances. “You just go and play as best as you can. You need to find the needed emotions from yourself. There’s no other way.” The former NHLer is now 36 years old, but he feels that he has plenty of gas left in the tank. He is one of the most experienced players in the KHL, but he does realize he can’t take his foot off the throttle. “I understand that there are a lot of young up-and-coming players. They are very talented. However, I try not to give their competition too much weight.”

With this kind of mentality, hopefully Semin will see fans back in the stands before he ultimately calls it a career and rides off into the sunset. Everyone that has any interest in hockey knows that the game is not the same without fans, and hopefully they can return sooner rather than later.
