SHEA THEODORE HONOURS GRANDMOTHER WITH FUND TO FIGHT CANCER

Vegas Golden Knights defenceman Shea Theodore honoured his grandmother with a fund to fight cancer on Friday, donating $50,000 to Susan G. Komen Nevada.

Theodore created the fund with the Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada, in partnership with Susan G. Komen Nevada called Kay’s Power Play. It raises awareness and measures to fight breast cancer, in particular for the uninsured, underinsured and patients younger than 40 whose mammograms are not covered by insurance.

It is something that hits very close to home for Theodore, who’s grandmother passed away from breast cancer on June 15. During the 2019-20 season, she was able to go onto the ice and drop the puck for a ceremonial faceoff between Theodore and San Jose Sharks captain Logan Couture.

“To be able to be on the ice and have her drop the puck and look at all the people there in support and showing the lights on their phones, I mean, that’s definitely one of the coolest things that’s ever happened to me,” Theodore said at the time.

After presenting the check Friday, Theodore spoke to just how important this foundation is.

“I think it’s very important, and it’s going to help a lot of people,” he said.

This incident hits close to Theodore not only because of his grandmother. The 25-year-old himself was diagnosed with testicular cancer while playing for Team Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Championship in Slovakia. After a game versus Finland, he was told he needed to be tested for banned substances, something he found odd considering he had already done a random test just days prior. As it turned out, that test did catch something, but not banned substances.

“I was in shock,” Theodore said. “Immediately, I was like, ‘Hey can we get our team doctor in here?’ There’s four guys in suits kind of explaining a whole bunch of stuff in kind of broken English.”

Thankfully, Theodore’s cancer was discovered early and didn’t have a chance to spread. As it turned out, he never even needed chemotherapy, and was back on the ice for training camp in September. Now, he has one main message he wants everyone to hear to help spread awareness:

“My whole message that I’m trying to get across is to go get tested, do your self-checks,” Theodore said. “You never know when it could come up or who it can affect.”
