STARS PLACE PROMISING BLUELINER ON WAIVERS

As the Stars prepare their roster for the season opener on Friday night, the team announced that they've placed defenceman Julius Honka on waivers.

Honka, 25, re-signed with the Dallas Stars to a one-year, $700k contract in October 2020, after spending the 2019-20 season in Liiga, Finland's top division. Honka was an RFA in July 2019, and after he couldn't come to an agreement with the Stars on a new contract, he opted to head back home to Finland for the season.

In 46 games with JYP, Honka had 15 points (4 G, 11 A), 16 penalty minutes, and was a +9. The Stars loaned him to Liiga club, Pelicans, to start the 2020-21 season. He had a pretty good loan stint, putting up 7 points (3 G, 4 A), 4 penalty minutes, and was a +8.

He was drafted in the first round, 14th overall, by the Dallas Stars in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. In 87 regular season games, he's tallied 13 points (2 G, 11 A), 28 penalty minutes, and is a -7.

Internationally, Honka has represented Finland on several occasions, most recently at the 2018 IIHF World Hockey Championships. In 8 games, he recorded 1 point (1 A), 0 penalty minutes, and was a +2 as Finland finished 5th after losing to Switzerland in the quarterfinals.
