STEVE SIMMONS AND LEAF FANS AT IT AGAIN AFTER CRITICISM OF KYLE DUBAS

Toronto Sun sports columnist Steve Simmons and fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs are once again battling it out in a war of words. This time, it's over criticism of Toronto general manager Kyle Dubas.

Simmons took to Twitter on Monday and pointed out that "17 different NHL general managers received votes for the Jim Gregory GM of the Year Award the past two seasons. Kyle Dubas did not receive a single vote in either season."

This criticism didn't sit well with many fans who pointed out that several NHL GMs have not received votes for GM of the Year over the last two seasons and yet, for some reason, Simmons decided to single out Dubas.

To be clear, Simmons criticism of Dubas may have something to do with a story he ran earlier this year and the team's response to it. Simmons hasn't necessarily been well-liked in Toronto for some time and it became worse back in June when he broke the story that Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews had tested positive for COVID-19. Matthews was the first (and only) NHL player to have his diagnosis released without his consent. From a legal standpoint, Simmons did nothing wrong. From an ethical/moral standpoint, well, that's a matter of opinion. Simmons took a lot of criticism for the story from many who felt he had violated Matthews' privacy. Matthews himself called out Simmons for the story during a media conference while the Leafs were still in the qualifying round of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Dubas also made it clear he wasn't overly happy with Simmons' story, choosing to answer a couple of questions from the reporter with just "yes" or "no" and failing to elaborate, something Dubas never does.

As for his criticism of Dubas regarding the Jim Gregory Award, he's not wrong. But, again, it does seem a bit odd that Simmons would make this distinction when Dubas is not the only GM to not have received any votes over the last two seasons. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that Lou Lamoriello, the person Dubas replaced in Toronto, was this year's winner. Perhaps it was a petty response to receiving short answers from the GM. Maybe he was just pointing out the obvious. Either way, the response was swift and severe.
