Story of former NHLer hospitalized in Russia takes a turn as the victim is alleged to have been the aggressor

5 décembre 2019
As we had previously reported, former NHLer Maxim Kondratyev, captain of KHL's HC Amur Khabarovsk, had been laid up in the hospital, allegedly as a result of a n attack by an ex-con.

Now, more details are emerging about the case, coming from the side of the alleged perpetrator and video evidence which would seem to suggest that Kondratyev was not a victim of a criminal act, but rather of his own foolishness.

In separate interviews to a YouTube video blog and Sport Express, the man accused of assaulting Kondratyev, Alexey Markov, who claims to be a businessman with no criminal record as was previously reported, told a very different story of the encounter. He claimed that he had arrived at a parking stand near some restaurants to pick up his wife, after 1am on December 1st, the night after Amur won 5:0 over HC Spartak Moscow and just two days before they were set for a big match with HC Avangard Omsk. According to Markov, and backed up by a security camera evidence, a car parked close alongside him to the right. When he heard the car's back door opening and slamming into his car, he rolled down his window and mentioned this to the young woman in a white coat who was driving. For his trouble, he claims he was greeted by curses and abuse, and when he exited the car to inspect the damage, he was confronted by Kondratyev, and two of his teammates, the twin brothers Vyacheslav and Vladimir Ushenin, as well as the still fuming and verbally abusive woman who turned out to be Kondratyev's wife.

Analyzing the situation, Markov believed he was in a 1 versus 3 situation and attempted to defend himself. At some point during the confrontation, Kondratyev went down and was unconscious. Markov claims that Kondratyev slipped and fell on his own. Markov asserted that in his opinion, considering the state the foursome were in and the persistent smell of alcohol coming from them, that they were likely intoxicated. The Ushenin brothers then attempted to restrain Kondratyev's wife who still cursing Markov and attempting to assault him. As an ambulance was called, one of the Ushenins advised Markov to leave the scene, which he did after picking up his wife.

Markov claims that the team, which declined to comment on the incident, put out the rumour of his alleged criminal past to discredit him and that he intends to sue the club for defamation of character once he is cleared of assault charges. In addition to the footage from the security camera, Markov believes that the police will question passersby who saw the situation unfold, as well as the Ushenin brothers, who he hopes will "do the right thing."

Markov also claims that after doing a little investigating on his own, he found out that Kondratyev's wife has a reputation for violent drunken behaviour, to the point where local car service drivers refuse service to her. He also claims that if the injury is as bad as the club claimed, that being an open head injury and an intracerebral hematoma, Kondratyev would not be in stable condition so quickly after the incident.

"Maxim is a good guy, God bless him," said Markov. "I'm very sorry that this incident happened, but you can't just assault people, it's wrong."
