Coaches most at risk of losing their jobs according to Sportsnet

5 décembre 2019
We're nearly thirty games into the season and already some coaches have been shown the door. They may not have been dismissed for the same reason, but the fact seems to remain that when a team is struggling, the coach is usually the first to go.

After the Montreal Canadiens' eight-game losing streak, many are calling for Claude Julien's head. However, is should Julien shoulder all the blame? If we're dividing up the pie, some blame goes to poor team defense. Perhaps one could point the finger in GM Marc Bergevin's direction as well. He has, after all, been the head of the snake through many years of struggle in Montreal.

Sportsnet's Luke Fox has compiled a list of coaches that are hypothetically most likely to lose their jobs in the coming weeks.

Unsurprisingly, Bruce Cassidy and Todd Reirden appear to be safe, as Boston and Washington are in first and second place, respectively. More among the lifeboats are the defending champions, the St. Louis Blues, as well as the Colorado Avalanche and the New York Islanders. These five teams are all in the top 2 of their respective divisions.

Conversely, the two teams whose coaches are at the highest risk to fire the coach at this stage are the Detroit Red Wings and the Los Angeles Kings, for obvious reasons. These two teams are among those residing in the basement of the League.

As for the aforementioned Habs, they are 20th, just behind the San Jose Sharks (19th) and ahead of the New York Rangers (21st). It is clear that the Montreal's position within the Atlantic Division standings (4th in their division) plays a role in why Claude Julien is not higher in Fox's list, despite the recent 8-game losing streak. Things could change, however, as it is only a matter of time before the Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs really get going.
