Calgary Flames to get new stadium as city approves final plans and details

5 décembre 2019
It appears that the days of the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary are numbered and the Flames will be getting a new arena.

The Saddledome has been in operation since October of 1983 and has undergone multiple renovations. In the last few years, different proposals were floated to the city council, with some going as far building a huge sports complex housing the Flames, the Calgary Hitmen, and other sports teams. But the proposal that won out is the so-called Event Centre at Victoria Park. Once the stadium is built, the Saddledome will be demolished.

The new arena will have a capacity of somewhere between 19,000 and 20,000, about the same as the current one. It will lock the Flames into a 35-year lease which will prevent them from considering a move elsewhere. The city projects that it will contribute $275 million CAD, and expe3cts returns of over $400 million CAD over the course of the next 35 years. Of course, one must remember that costs tend to inflate during actual construction.

Are you ok with cities spending taxpayer money for sports arenas?
