NY Post says Subban should be embarrassed for marketing everything but his own game

6 décembre 2019
The New York Post's Brett Cyrgalis has released a new column in which he absolutely rips apart New Jersey's P.K. Subban. Cyrgalis says Subban should be embarrassed for seemingly hocking every product he can while making $9 million a year and letting his play on the ice fall apart.
Players fade. Subban is 30 years old, and that happens.

But what should be embarrassing is that during this time of organizational upheaval, he is out and about almost every day with another promotion. On Wednesday, a day after (head coach John) Hynes was fired following desultory efforts in a 4-0 loss to the Rangers at home and a 7-1 thumping up in Buffalo, Subban was at Bryant Park doing an appearance for Red Bull. The press release said he was “2013 James Norris Memorial Trophy winner, entrepreneur, and philanthropist.” On Thursday night, he was at the Adidas flagship store in Manhattan. What a great way to get ready for a big back-to-back under new coach Alain Nasreddine, Friday night at home against the Blackhawks and then Subban’s big return to Nashville on Saturday night.
Cyrgalis continues ripping in to Subban, saying he's an "absolute shell of himself on the ice" and making accusations that "his insipid play surely helped to get a good man and good coach in John Hynes fired."

Looking purely at the numbers, it's tough to disagree that Subban is a shell of the player he once was, at least at this time. In 27 games this season, he has just five points (two goals, three assists). He's on pace for a dismal 15 points, which would be his worst total ever for a full season of play and far removed from his Norris Trophy winning season when he recorded 38 in a lockout-shortened year where he played 42 games. He's also a minus-12. He's never finished a season lower than minus-8.

Cyrgalis goes even further than just criticizing him for terrible numbers and being willing to lend his name to so many products. He also laid into him for his constant use of social media.
The league has bought in, too. Opening up the All-Star game to fan voting again...it is pledging $25,000 to the players who get the most retweets on Twitter and the most likes on Instagram using their hashtag, #NHLAllStar. Just give it to Subban now.

It is amazing that he has time to practice and play games with all the time he spends posting on social media. They must let him keep his phone on the bench.
He goes on to say Subban's constant marketing of products and himself is coming at the expense of the on-ice product. He applauds Subban for his charitable work, which has resulted in million of dollars given and raised, but adds "Subban is hardly a NHL defenseman, let alone an elite one. All the while, he does remain an elite spokesman — just not for the Devils."
