Devils legend Scott Stevens loves Nathan MacKinnon's willingness to leave money on the table

7 décembre 2019
When Nathan MacKinnon came out earlier this week and stated that he plans to take less on his next contract, a lot of people were caught off-guard, in a good way. Here's what MacKinnon had to say in an interview with Forbes' Jordan Horrobin:

"We have guys that we wouldn't (otherwise) be able to bring in. On my next deal, I'll take less again. Because I want to win with this group."

On Friday, New Jersey Devils legend, Scott Stevens, praised MacKinnon's willingness to leave money on the table in order to give the Colorado Avalanche some financial flexibility to help build a team that is a perennial cup contender and, hopefully, win a championship.

"I'll tell you one thing, if I'm a free agent and I want to win a Stanley Cup one day, I will be going to Colorado and joining Nathan MacKinnon because he is willing to sacrifice for the team," commented Stevens.

The former Devils captain knows what it takes to win and just how important it is to make sacrifices for the good of the team in order to chase hockey's greatest prize. Although Stevens' sacrifices weren't monetary, it would be difficult to argue that the former Conn Smythe winner and Stanley Cup champion didn't sacrifice in other ways. The 55-year-old Kitchener, Ontario native was known for putting his body on the line, night in and night out, laying bone-jarring hits and even answering the bell and dropping the gloves whenever necessary.

"If you take care of your money and if you're smart, you'll have more than enough for your family and for yourself when you're done playing this game," Stevens continued, "but the bottom line is, you want to have a Stanley Cup. That's the most important thing. Nathan will have enough money, but he definitely wants a ring and if I want to win a Stanley Cup and I'm looking for a place to go, I'd be going to Colorado and joining Nathan MacKinnon, because he is saying the right things."

It's hard to argue with that logic. See the full video below:
