Dallas players react to their head coach being fired

10 décembre 2019
There remains a lot of confusion over why Jim Montgomery was suddenly fired from the Dallas Stars on Tuesday after about a year and a half on the job. And that includes among the players he had been coaching, who don't appear to know any more about the situation than the general public. The Athletic talked to several members of the Dallas Stars. Here's what a few had to say:

Tyler Seguin

It started off with confusion. Mostly the guys were confused on what’s going on seeing the brass here so early. It’s confusion, it’s sad... I wanted him to be the last coach I had in Dallas...we trust management and the decision they had to make"

Jamie Benn

“A huge shock. Definitely didn’t expect that one and still shocked. It’s pretty crazy that we are talking about this.”

“We all want to know all the answers. But that’s not the case. We believe that Jim Nill and our organization made the right move. So we’ll trust in them."

John Klingberg

“We know Monty, but we don’t know what happened. It’s about the Dallas Stars here, and like I said, we trust the management that they’re making the right decision for the Dallas Stars. It’s up to Jim (Nill) and the management if they want to release what happened or not.

“You see this all over — everywhere right now, not only in hockey or sports but you see it in normal life as well. It’s a good thing it comes up, too; there need to be changes around this world, how you treat people and how you think about stuff. That’s a good thing. It’s all shocking, but like I said, we’re professionals in here. We have to move on, and we have full confidence in the organization that they’re making the right move here.”

What we know so far is that the reason Montgomery was fired had nothing to do with any Dallas Stars players past or present, did not involved any employees of the organization, there's no criminal investigation underway and it happened since he was hired as coach of the organization in May of 2018.

“It is very clear this can not be tolerated,” said GM Jim Nill at a news conference. “And therefore we have relieved Jim Montgomery of his duties immediately. It is an honor and a privilege to work in the NHL, and there is a standard that we are held accountable to as an employee of the Dallas Stars organization.”
