Former NHLer voices his opinion on the Kassian / Tkachuk incident

12 janvier 2020
Scottie Upshall hasn't played in an NHL game since the 2017-18 season, but he has remained a household name mainly due to his appearances on the Spittin Chiclets podcast, but also because he likes to be vocal on Twitter about recent NHL events.

Most recently, he took to Twitter to voice his opinion on Tkachuk's hit on Zack Kassian during the second period of Saturday's Battle of Alberta.

"For those who haven't played the game...coming down from your wing (as a winger) to hit a vulnerable guy on a wraparound is as dirty as it gets. Such as below. I know because I've done it lots. I deserved a punch in the face too. If this hit was on McDavid, 10 gamer min!"

Which player won the James Norris Trophy, awarded to the best defenseman, in 2018?
Erik Karlsson
John Klingberg

Torey Krug

So it's clear how Upshall feels about the situation. He is a guy that brings a lot of experience to the table, he was drafted sixth overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He went on to play 759 NHL games, recording 138 goals and 285 points, he added 615 penalty minutes as well.

Upshall was unable to find himself an NHL contract following the 2017-18 season, but that was mostly due to a knee injury that he had been battling. He took the entire 2018-19 season off to rehab his injuries. Just recently, he signed a contract with Ambri-Piotta of the Swiss-A league. He was also part of the Canadian team that won gold at the 2019 Spengler Cup.

TSN broadcaster and former NHLer had this to say about the hit via Twitter:

"On Tkachuk v Kassian. I'm serious here. Aren't these the same hits Raffi Torres used to throw that the league eventually said they were penalties? Any hit from above goal line to player coming from below. #thenandnow."

Kassian is set to have a hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety on Monday.
