Malkin surpasses Jagr for 3rd in assists all-time in a Pens jersey

12 janvier 2020
At 33 years of age, Evgeni Malkin continues to be as dominant as ever for the Pittsburgh Penguins. After going through what he described as a low point of his career last season, he has bounced back in a big way.

With Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby being out of the lineup since early November, Malkin has picked up his play and carried the Penguins like he has done so many times in the past. The Russian superstar currently has 44 points in just 32 games on the season.

Earlier today in the Penguins win over the Arizona Coyotes, he recorded two more assists. The first assist however, had more significance than just your average point.

With which team did Guy Lafleur play his last NHL game?
Boston Bruins
Montreal Canadiens
Nordiques de Quebec
Pittsburgh Penguins
New York Rangers
Detroit Red Wings

As you can see, Malkin’s first assist of the game moved him into third in assists, all time in Penguins franchise history.

Jaromir Jagr is one of the best Penguins of all time, so passing him truly speaks to just how great Malkin’s tenure with the Penguins has been. Although it isn’t likely he will surpass Mario Lemieux's incredible 1003 assists, he still has a few more big years ahead of him and can continue to build on his total.

Asked post game about this incredible feat, Malkin had a humorous response to the Pittsburgh media.

Although Malkin plays it down, it is an extremely impressive milestone for the future hall of famer. Thanks in large part to the outstanding play by Malkin this season, the Penguins sit second in the Metropolitan division with 61 points. Next up for Malkin and his teammates is a game Tuesday night against the Minnesota Wild.
