Morgan Rielly out with a fractured foot, Rasmus Sandin called up to the big club

Mike Armenti   ·   13 janvier 2020
Following an absolute dismantling of the Toronto Maple Leafs at the hands of the Florida Panthers, by a score of 8-4, in Sunrise on Sunday evening, the Leafs will return home with their tails between their legs, licking their wounds and looking to regroup.

In what year was the Hart Trophy awarded for the first time?

As if it was not bad enough for the Buds to have been on the receiving end of such a shellacking on the scoresheet, the club has announced that their top defenseman, Morgan Rielly, will be sidelined for the next 8 weeks - at minimum - with a fractured foot after blocking a shot on Sunday.

This is an absolute worst-case scenario for the Leafs, who are in danger of falling out of a playoff spot after three consecutive losses, and with an already thin on the blueline with the absence of Jake Muzzin, matters may only get worse, especially with Division rivals Tampa Bay and Florida turning it on of late.

In an attempt to stop the bleeding, Leafs GM Kyle Dubas has decided to call up standout defensive prospect Rasmus Sandin from the AHL Toronto Marlies. Sandin had a 6-game tryout to begin the 2019-20 season, but was sent down, most suspect, due to the Leafs not wanting to burn a year of his entry-level contract (ELC).

Sandin performed wonderfully at the IIHF World Junior Championship tournament, which concluded earlier this month. He registered 10 points for Team Sweden, who were able to secure bronze medals in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Team Finland.

It seems like a foregone conclusion that the Leafs may have no choice but to burn a year of Sandin's ELC, unless of course Dubas can find a willing trade partner to bring in some defensive help in the coming days.

This is a horrible turn of events for a Maple Leafs team who were beginning to look like the team that most pundits had pinned as a top team in the Eastern Conference, prior to the start of the season. Perhaps the arrival of Sandin and the emergence of Justin Holl and Travis Dermott can help them to weather the storm until Rielly and Muzzin are ready to return. Time will tell.
