Neal comments on Matthew Tkachuk, plus Draisaitl's hot take on Tkachuk in the All Star Game

13 janvier 2020
There are few players in the NHL that are as good at getting under the skin of his opponents as Matthew Tkachuk. Boston Bruins star, Brad Marchand, is perhaps the only player in the league who is better at aggravating opposing players.

Most recently, Tkachuk is in the headlines for a couple of questionable hits that he laid on Zack Kassian during Saturday night's Battle of Alberta, and some comments that he made following the game.

James Neal was asked about the hit on Monday, he responded with,

"On the third one, Chucky (Tkachuk) was past me, and Kass didn't even have the puck, and he runs him and hits. If it is anyone else, they'd go down, but Kass stayed up. Look at his legs. On the first one Kass was engaged with Gio (Giordano) and he (Kass) is protecting the puck and going to the net and if anyone is surprised by the hit it is his own guy. He takes him (Giordano) out just as bad. It is insane. It is a gutless hit on a guy in a very vulnerable position. For him to come out after and say 'if he doesn't want to get hit then stay off the tracks. Those aren't the tracks. He is picking the puck up off the wall, on a rim, and he's engaged in a battle with a defenceman. And then he (Kassian) has a winger come ten feet out of position to take his head off. Ask any guy in hockey, no guy in hockey wants to see that hit. That has been gone out of the game for a long time. Guys like Raffi Torres and Steve Downie they were getting 15 game suspensions. He targets his head and chase him into a battle he isn't in."

Which team did Jaromir Jagr play his first NHL game with?
Boston Bruins
Washington Capitals
Flyers de Philadelphie
Pittsburgh Penguins
New York Rangers
Dallas Stars

The NHL All-Star Game will take place on Jan.25 in St.Louis, Tkachuk, along with Flames captain, Mark Giordano, were selected to represent the Flames for the game, while Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid (Pacific Division captain) will be in attendance representing the Oilers.

Edmonton Journal reporter, Jim Matheson, asked Draisaitl what he would do if he and McDavid ended up 3-on-3 with Tkachuk at the All-Star Game, Draisaitl was quick and to the point and responded with "I'd get off the ice."

Tkachuk certainly didn't make friends with any Oilers players on Saturday night.

The Calgary Flames vs the Edmonton Oilers is one of the greatest sports rivalries of all-time, but after over a decade of both teams being very mediocre, the inter-provincial matchup kind of lost it's excitement. Tkachuk is definitely doing his part in reviving the Battle of Alberta.

The two teams will meet each other three more times this season, they will face off right after all-star break on Jan. 29 in Edmonton, then again on Feb. 1 in Calgary. The last time these teams will meetup will be on April.4, the last day of the NHL's regular season.

Calgary currently sits first in the Pacific Division, while Edmonton holds onto the second wild card position, the interesting part about this is that there is just two points separating the Flames and the Oilers. If things remain this way, there is a very good chance that the final Battle of Alberta of the season will determine where the two teams finish in the standings and what seeding they will have heading into the playoffs. Either way, we are in for an exciting second half of hockey.
