Mathieu Perreault furious with NHL's Player Safety Department

Colton Pankiw   ·   16 janvier 2020
Winnipeg Jets forward Mathieu Perreault took what appeared to be a late, high hit from Canucks forward Jake Virtanen on Tuesday night. Post-game, Perrault made it clear he was not happy with the hit and hoped Virtanen would receive supplemental discipline.

Who was selected in the first round number 24 of the 2011 entry draft by the Senators?
Kyle Turris
Mark Stone
Matt Puempel
Nick Foligno
Nikita Filatov
Robin Lehner

“I was pissed. That was stupid. Like, what’s wrong with him? Why would you do that? I didn’t even have the puck. Actually, I see him coming and he puts his elbow top, right in my chin,” said Perrault.

When asked about supplemental discipline, Perrault quoted, “I hope so. They got to look at that one. He comes to hit me and I see him coming and then he just flicks his elbow in my face. I don’t even have time… I flinched and he gets me in the face for no reason. Absolutely no reason.”

The NHL clearly didn’t have as much of an issue with the hit as Perreault, as it was announced that Virtanen would not be suspended. When Perreault was made aware of this, he had more animated quotes.

“Player safety, my ass… Now I got to take matters into my own hand the next time this happens and I get to swing my stick across his forehead and I shouldn’t get suspended then,” a fired up Perrault remarked to the media. “I’m the smallest guy on the ice so I can’t really fight anybody. The only thing I can to do defend myself is use my stick. So the next guy that does that to me is getting my f*****g stick.”

These are very recent quotes, so there has been no response back from the league at this point. Looking back on past instances, it can be expected the league will force out some sort of punishment to Perreault for his comments, likely in the case of a fine.
