Joel Quenneville named Coach of the Decade by NHL

Joe De Falco   ·   16 janvier 2020
As we usher in the new decade, the NHL is taking a look back at the last ten years, compiling information to see who has led the NHL in various categories, such as most goals, most points.. etc.

As of Thursday morning, NHL.com has announced Florida Panthers Head Coach Joel Quenneville as Coach of the Decade.

Quenneville helped Chicago end a 49-year title drought, securing the Stanley Cup in 2010. He would then march the Blackhawks to two more Stanley Cup Championships through the decade, in 2013 and 2015.

In 2016, Quenneville would also become the second winningest NHL coach in history, surpassing the late Al Arbour. He would also coach the second most games in NHL history, reaching and surpassing 1,608 games in 2018. Through his 11 seasons with the Hawks, he would hold a record of 452-249-96.

Quenneville spoke on his time in Chicago;

"We had a great run, we had a real young team that was deep in talent, skill, speed and character. It was a privilege. When we had to change on the fly, I think we did a pretty amazing job of keeping some balance and depth and still be able to have four lines that were contributing and a factor. And when push came to shove in the bigger games later in the series, big players, top guys were outstanding. But the depth, the four line team put us in position to have that balance for 10 years."

Quenneville was terminated from his position as Head Coach of the Chicago Blackhawks in November of 2018. He took his current position as Head Coach of the Florida Panthers in April of 2019, earning his 900th career win with his new team.

The newly voted Coach of the Decade received great praise with this nomination from the league and his peers, including Chicago forward and Stanley Cup Champion, Andrew Shaw:
