Former Leafs captain appears interested in front office position

Mike Armenti   ·   16 janvier 2020
The defensive issues of the Toronto Maple Leafs have been well documented for several seasons. On most nights, there have been more questions than answers, especially with all of the injury woes the Leafs' blueline has suffered this season. With the Leafs having been linked to San Jose Sharks defenseman Brendan Dillon earlier in the week, most pundits believe it's no longer the question of "if" the Leafs make a move to bolster their blueline, but "when".

How many Molson Cups, awarded to the player with the most votes when selecting the stars for each game, has Mats Naslund won in his NHL career?

Former Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf's presence alongside team president Brendan Shanahan on Thursday evening has certainly raised a few eyebrows, in light of the recent bumps and bruises the Leafs have endured on the back end.

The plot began to thicken when The Athletic's James Mirtle confirmed that Phaneuf was present at both the Leafs' practice facility on Wednesday and at Thursday's morning skate as well.

It has prompted many to question whether Phaneuf had entertained the idea of returning to the Leafs for the remainder of the season on a league-minimum contract.

Well, not so fast. TSN's Mark Masters has reported that Phaneuf may in fact be working alongside Shanahan in more of a job shadowing capacity. Perhaps Phaneuf is exploring a career transition from the ice to the office. There is no confirmation as to whether the Maple Leafs have offered any such position to Phaneuf at this time.

We will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as they become available.
