Former NHLer proposes a game-changer for the Department of Player Safety

Mike Armenti   ·   20 janvier 2020
Former NHL enforcer Daniel Carcillo has been very outspoken on social media about his distaste for how the league continues to fall short on doing everything in its power to protect the players.

Which Montreal Canadiens defenseman collected the most points in 2017-18?
Jeff Petry
Joe Morrow
Jordie Benn
Karl Alzner
Mike Reilly
Shea Weber

It's hard to argue that Carcillo does not have a point, as there have been a litany of liberties taken on star players, while the Department of Player Safety seems content in delivering a series of wrist-slaps in the form of minuscule fines and sub-satiafactory suspensions that do very little to hold players accountable and even less for preventing future occurrences.

Among the victims of questionable (at best) hits in recent seasons, there are several star players that are 25 years of age or younger who have missed significant time due to concussions and Carcillo is among those who are pressing the league to take more swift and serious action against individuals who target the head and deliver blindside hits to unsuspecting players. Some of the victimized players include:

Elias Pettersson, Rasmus Dahlin, Charlie McAvoy, Jake Guentzel, Auston Matthews, Sebastian Aho, Cody Glass and Jesperi Kotkaniemi. These players are cornerstones of their respective franchises and the fact that they have all been the targets of predatory hits suggests that Carcillo and other justice-seekers are validated in their dissatisfaction with the league and the DoPS.

On Sunday, Carcillo proposed a very interesting and progressive concept via Twitter, suggesting that the league should not have any more former players running the Department of Player Safety.

Who does Carcillo suggest would be a suitable candidate for the gig?

"Maybe it's time to appoint a woman who will take care to punish accordingly, without bias".

Food for thought. Maybe Carcillo is right. If the league truly wants to keep its players safe and healthy, the punishment has to start fitting the crime. Perhaps the only way to get there is to go in a bit of a different direction with player safety, personnel-wise.

Do you agree with Carcillo that a change is needed within the Department of Player Safety?
