League sends memo to officials on 'Michigan' goal

Tim Tucker   ·   22 janvier 2020
The Michigan goal, lacrosse goal, the Svech, whatever you want to call it, has been all the rage this NHL season. Carolina's Andrei Svechnikov caused a bit of a sensation when he managed to become the first person ever in the NHL to score the goal in early November. Since that time, Svechnikov himself has done it one more and Nashville's Filip Forsberg has also managed to pull off the move .There have been a couple of other attempts but, so far, these remain the only three Michigan goals scored in the NHL. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the sensation has also come with a reminder from the league to officials of what to look for when this type of goal is scored.

In his latest "31 Thoughts" Friedman states:
The league sent a memo to its officials about the “Michigan”/“Svechnikov” lacrosse-style goal reminding officials that any goal scorer must have his stick below shoulder level when possessing the puck and below the crossbar when putting it home. Otherwise, the stick is in an illegal position.
We assume the blade of the stick is what the memo is specifically referring to. That makes a lot of sense considering the same rules apply on a tip shot as well (blade or point of contact with the stick). It is interesting that the league would decide to send a memo to officials, though. It appears the NHL is expecting many more of these types of goals to be scored in the future.

Like anything new, the hoopla surrounding it tends to die down as it happens more and more often. It was a week after Svechnikov scored the first lacrosse goal before sports outlets stopped talking about it. You'll still see the move on highlight reels when the goal is scored (it's a nice move, regardless of how many times it's been done) but it will never carry the same hype as that first one did again. We just hope players remember to keep their sticks down when doing it.
