With several players declining All-Star invitations, Josi reinforces the honor

Mike Armenti   ·   23 janvier 2020
With the long list of replacement players who will be attending the 2020 Honda NHL All-Star Game in place of the original selections, the modern NHL All-Star experience is not quite what it used to be.

Which Philadelphia Flyers player has scored more than 400 goals with the team?
Bill Barber
Brian Propp
Richard MacLeish
Rick Tocchet
Robert Clarke
Tim Kerr

Granted, there have been a few injury announcements at a very inopportune time, ahead of this weekend's festivities in St. Louis, but the number of players who have openly admitted to preferring the time off has to be a cause for concern within the NHL executive offices.

Among the names who were originally named, but will not take part in the event are Tuukka Rask, Alex Ovechkin, Jakob Silfverberg, Marc-Andre Fleury, Artemi Panarin, Darcy Keumper, Logan Couture, Kyle Palmieri, Jake Guentzel, Dougie Hamilton and Joonas Korpisalo. Auston Matthews will attend the ASG and be made available for off-ice activities, but due to a nagging wrist injury, he will not see any on-ice action at the event.

The only division that has not had anyone back out since the original announcement is the Central and for Nashville Predators captain Roman Josi, the honor of being selected to represent the Central Division has remained a proud moment for him, even in this, his 3rd All-Star appearance.

"For me it's an honor to go," Josi says. "I've always had a great time playing in the All-Star Game, and it's a huge honor."

"I definitely sit on the bench sometimes and just enjoy watching it," he continued. "I mean, normally I play against these guys and it's pretty fun to be out there with them. You see the skill of some players and it really shows up."

It's hard not to be in awe of the absolute best players in the league showcasing their skills in an attempt to dazzle fans. Josi may be among them, but that doesn't mean that he can't still be a fan of the sport, while also taking part in the action. Like many fans, Josi has gotten a kick out of marvelling at the undeniable talent of young Connor McDavid.

"McDavid is real special," Josi says. He's unbelievable, and he's definitely fun to watch. Then I think for me, as a defenseman, I love watching other defensive guys play like [Washington Capitals defenseman John] Carlson, [Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor] Hedman, [Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew] Doughty, all those guys."

No word yet on which events Josi will take part in.
