Naming rights front-runner emerges in Seattle

Tim Tucker   ·   23 janvier 2020
Naming rights for NHL arenas, and the homes of teams in any other sport, is big business. Buying the naming rights to an arena can cost companies million of dollars per year. According to Sports Business Daily, a front runner for the name of the arena being built to house the NHL's latest expansion team in Seattle has already emerged.

SBJ quotes sources as saying three companies are still in negotiations for the naming rights to the arena in Seattle. However, it insists the clear front runner is a very familiar name all across North America; Amazon. The NHL Seattle ownership group includes some individuals with Amazon ties, including Amazon Web Services CEO Andy Jassy, so it makes sense that the company would be interested in being involved with the team. The cost is estimated to be around $14 million per year.

The arena is slated to open in June of 2021 and will also house the Seattle Storm of the WNBA. The yet-to-be-named Seattle hockey team will begin playing in October of 2021. According to SBJ, the ownership group for the teams would like to have the naming rights in place by June of this year. Seattle is set to announce the name of the team, as well as the colour scheme and logo, sometime in the very near future.
