NHL announces skills competition participants

Josh Vold   ·   23 janvier 2020
On Thursday evening the NHL announced the participants for the 2020 skills competition that will take place on Friday, Jan. 24 in St. Louis.

From Connor McDavid in the fastest skater competition to Shea Weber in the hardest shot, some of the NHL's biggest names will be participating in the festivities.

Bridgestone NHL Fastest Skater: Each skater will be timed for one full lap around the rink, skater with the fastest time will be named the Bridgestone NHL Fastest Skater.

Jack Eichel, Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, Mathew Barzal, Chris Kreider, Anthony Duclair, Travis Konecny, Quinn Hughes

McDavid has won the competition the last three years, and he's the favorite to win it again this season, but he's up against some stiff competition this year and we might finally see him dethroned as the NHL's fastest skater.

My prediction: Connor McDavid

Bud Light NHL Save Streak: Eight goalies and all 36 players will participate in this event and the goalies will compete to see who can make the most consecutive saves. Each goalie will face a minimum of nine scoring attempts against an opposing division.

David Rittich, Tristan Jarry, Jordan Binnington, Andrei Vasilevsky, Frederik Andersen, Jacob Markstrom, Braden Holtby, Connor Hellebuyck

Henrik Lundqvist won the competition last season with 12 saves, but since he was not selected to go to the All-Star game this season a new champion will be crowned.

My prediction: Jacob Markstrom

Honda NHL Accuracy Shooting: Each player will be positioned 25 feet away from the net and will compete to see who can hit four LED targets in each corner of the net the fastest.

Jacob Slavin, Tyler Bertuzzi, Leon Draisaitl, Jonathan Huberdeau, Nico Hischier, Tomas Hertl, Alex Pietrangelo, Mark Sheifele

David Pastrnak won this competition fairly easy last year, hitting all four targets in 11:309, but with Pasta not taking part in the competition we will be seeing a new winner this season.

My prediction: Leon Draisaitl

Enterprise NHL Hardest Shot: Six players will compete to see who can record the highest speed with a slap shot. Each player will get two attempts with the highest of their two speeds being recorded. Shots have to be on goal in order to be calculated and all shots are measured by radar in miles per hour.

Mark Giordano, Seth Jones, Shea Weber, Victor Hedman, Elias Petterson, John Carlson

John Carslon won this last season after recording a 102.8 Mph slap shot, but Weber has been so impressive in this competition in the past that it will be hard to count him out on Friday night.

My prediction: Shea Weber

Gatorade NHL Shooting Stars: This event will feature eight NHL players, one Canadian women's All-Star and one American women's All-Star. Players will attempt to hit targets positioned on the ice while standing in a section of the Enterprise Center above the lower bowl seats.

David Pastrnak, Matthew Tkachuk, Patrick Kane, Tyler Seguin, Brady Tkachuk, David Perron, Ryan O'Reilly, Mitch Marner, Canadian Women's All-Star (TBD), American Women's All-Star (TBD)

Fans have been very vocal about their dislikes with the All-Star game weekend, and I think this is an awesome way to add a little more excitement to the skills competition.

My prediction: Patrick Kane

Elite Women's 3-on-3. Some of the top Canadian and American women's hockey players will compete in a 3-on-3 game that will feature two ten minute periods and will use a running clock.

Team Canada: Meghan Agosta, Melodie Daoust, Rebecca Johnston, Sarah Nurse, Marie-Philip Poulin, Natalie Spooner, Blayre Turnbull, Renata Fast, Laura Fortino, Ann-Renee Desbiens

Team USA: Alex Carpenter, Kendall Coyne Schofield, Brianna Decker, Amanda Kessel, Hilary Knight, Jocelyne Lee Stecklein, Alex Cavallini

You know that you're going to be in for a great game anytime the Canadian and American women's teams meet, and with the added bonus of the game being 3-on-3, this could turn out to be the most exciting event of the entire night.

'Whatever It Takes' a documentary about McDavid's recovery from last season's knee injury will air Friday night on Sportsnet immediately after the skills competition.

On Saturday the NHL's best will face off in a 3-on-3 tournament that has a $1 million prize for the winning team.
