Tkachuk says Battle of Alberta has no place at All-Star Game

Tim Tucker   ·   24 janvier 2020
Since the incident between Calgary's Matthew Tkachuk and Edmonton's Zack Kassian about two weeks ago, the bad blood between the two teams has remained a hot topic in the media. Kassian's teammate, Leon Draisaitl, even said recently he'd probably get off the ice if the coach put him out with Tkachuk during the All-Star Game this weekend. For his part, Tkachuk says the All-Star Game is a place to let those rivalries go.

Who became the first female president of an NHL franchise?

Heidi Browning
Kim Davis
Kim Pegula
Marguerite Norris
Sarah Davis

"They're great players," said Tkachuk, referring to Draisaitl and fellow Oiler Connor McDavid when asked about playing with them this weekend. "This isn't an event to talk about stuff like that. This is an event where the best players in the best sport are coming here, playing on the same team and going out and having some fun."

Tkachuk added he's looking forward to sharing the locker room and the ice with everyone at the All-Star Game, Draisaitl and McDavid included.

"Those guys in particular are some of the best in the NHL, so to share a room with them and the same ice, it's gonna be awesome."

"There's no rivalry here. There's no animosity or anything...that's the best part about hockey. Hockey players can play hard against each other for 82 games a year and then you see them one night in the summer and you'll be buddies with them."

Tkachuk was heavily criticized and made fun of for laying at least three questionable hits on Kassian during the game against Edmonton earlier this month and then refusing to fight Kassian when he dropped the gloves. Kassian ended up with a two game suspension for instigating.

The two teams will meet again on January 29th, which will also be Kassian's first game back from his suspension. If anything, the incident has rekindled the Battle of Alberta. The NHL has already stated that George Parros, head of the Department of Player Safety, will be in attendance for the game.
