Player and puck tracking is designed to allow the league to collect stats and player data more efficiently and accurately, while also providing the at home hockey fan with more information for both entertainment and betting purposes.

He also added that all 31 NHL arenas will have access to the puck and player tracking data by the start of the 2020-2021 season.

The league originally planned to have the technologies in place for the onset of the 2019-2020 season, but were hindered by a partnering change from Jomgo World Corp to SportsMEDIA Technology.

The plan is to utilize the data to update the NHL’s scoring system, install the tracking systems into all 31 arenas, and distribute innovate graphics and visualizations to NHL media partners and stakeholders.

While some may have concerns about how player and puck tracking may change the visual aesthetics of the hockey watching experience, it’s clear that tracking data is in the very near future.
