Junior hockey player badly burned in fire; girlfriend doesn't make it

Very sad news out of Thompson, Manitoba as a junior hockey player from that city and his girlfriend were involved in a bad house fire on Friday. The Thompson Citizen is reporting that Keith Blacksmith was badly burned in the fire, while additional reports say his girlfriend was tragically killed in the blaze.

Blacksmith plays with the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (NCN) Flames Keystone Junior Hockey League team. His mother said on Facebook that he suffered burns to much of his body and that he was being flown out to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg for treatment.

Thompson's mother recently put out an update on his condition on Facebook stating his entire body is covered in gauze, except for his head. She added he's expected to be in an induced coma for quite some time. He is, however, considered to be in stable condition, despite needing the help of breathing equipment. She asked that everyone keep her son in their prayers.

The fire broke out in the very early hours of Friday morning. Clouds of smoke were reported to be still pouring out of the house just before noon. Blacksmith and his girlfriend were helped out of the home by neighbours before emergency personnel arrived. Our thoughts are with the family at this extremely difficult time.
