Anthony Duclair says he wants to be part of Ottawa's rebuild

Tim Tucker   ·   27 janvier 2020
After struggling to find his offensive touch in his first few seasons in the NHL, Anthony Duclair has enjoyed a major resurgence with the Ottawa Senators. Since being traded to the team at the deadline last season, he has 47 points (29 goals, 18 assists) in 68 games. If Duclair gets his way, he'll remain in Ottawa for the long-term.

Which player collected the most points for the Montreal Canadiens in 1986?
Bob Gainey
Guy Carbonneau
Kjell Dahlin
Larry Robinson
Mats Naslund
Ryan Walter

"I just want to focus and really end the season on a positive note like I did last year," Duclair said at this weekend's All-Star Game, according to Sportsnet's Luke Fox. "Really make a statement to the management and the coaching staff that I want to be a big part of this rebuild. I'm still a young guy."

"When the change is gonna happen, when Ottawa's gonna become a contender, I want to be part of that," Duclair added. "So I'm working as hard as I can."

Ottawa is one of the worst teams in the NHL this seasons and, under normal circumstances, one would think its rebuild is likely going to take a while. However, with the San Jose Sharks also struggling and the Senators owning that team's first-round pick in the upcoming draft, Ottawa is set to get two high selections in an NHL draft deep with talent. Of the 20 skaters on their active roster, 13 of them, including Duclair, are set to become restricted or unrestricted free agents, so the Senators' management will have some important decisions to make at the trade deadline this season and over the summer.

Duclair, who was called out by previous coach John Tortorella who said he didn't think Duclair knew how to play hockey, leads Ottawa in both goals and points this season. Currently making $1.65 million this season, Duclair is likely in line for a big raise over the summer, whether it comes from Ottawa or another team. Given his resurgence and apparent love for the team, it would seem crazy if the Senators decided not to keep him.
