Former Flames enforcer offers advice to Matthew Tkachuk

Mike Olivson   ·   27 janvier 2020
At the height of the Edmonton Oilers' dominance, the last NHLer to wear number 0 on his jersey was turning up the heat in the Battle of Alberta on the Flames' behalf.

Times change, names change, but the rivalry continues unabated. Now, the man who Matthew Tkachuk might have called a role model of sorts, spoke to Sportsnet with some advice for the budding agitator ahead of the Wednesday tilt with the Oilers and perhaps his own personal tilt with Zack Kassian.

Neil Sheehy, whose NHL career lasted all of 379 games between 1983 and 1992, compiled 1311 PIMs, mostly playing for the Flames, to go with a meager 65 points. Known as someone unafraid to take runs at Oilers' skilled players and then proceed to turtle up, he thinks Tkachuk is not obligated to fight Kassian, even by the murky definition of the honor code among NHL's enforcers:

"This wasn't a cheap shot on Kassian," said Sheehy. "It was a good hit. I thought Tkachuk went easy on him, and I think that's scary because it was a big hit."

The 59-year-old player-turned-sports-agent still relishes his memories of being booed in Edmonton during his years in the Battle of Alberta. But he feels that Tkachuk should not be allowing Kassian to goad him into a fight, if the game is on the line, especially considering that the Flames and Oilers are tied in the standings.

If a game gets out of hand, scoreboard wise, that is when Sheehy is predicting the shenanigans top break out. Kassian is likely to remember that his penalty taken by wailing on a turtled Tkachuk cost his team the last game, so he will not repeat his mistake.

“That’s the history of the Battle of Alberta – paybacks happen,” said Sheehy. "If Edmonton or the Flames got up four or five goals you knew the nonsense was going to start. That’s when paybacks happen."

It is interesting to note that NHL's Head of the Department of Player safety, "The Violent Gentleman" George Parros, will be on hand for the 'festivities' on Wednesday in Edmonton. Kassian has already served a two-game suspension, and Parros probably doesn't mind getting a look at the fresh action live before he has to review it on video back at the office.
