Leafs recall Pontus Aberg

Colton Pankiw   ·   10 février 2020
The Toronto Maple Leafs announced early on Monday that they have recalled Pontus Aberg from the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. Aberg, who was signed to a one-year deal worth $700,000 this offseason, has put up an impressive 38 points in 44 games for the Marlies this year. He has also played in three games for the Leafs, where he has recorded one assist.

As reported by Sportsnet reporter Chris Johnston, there are many Leafs who could potentially be out for tomorrow night's game against the Arizona Coyotes, which is likely the reason for Aberg’s call up. Also important to note is that forward William Nylander did not play in Friday and Saturday’s games due to the flu. No additional info has come out yet as to whether he will be able to return tomorrow.

Although it is unclear how long Aberg will remain with the team, he certainly isn’t a bad depth option to have. The 26-year-old Swedish forward has played 130 regular season games and 18 playoff games over the course of his NHL career. He has had trouble sticking in the league, as those 130 games have come with five different teams. Nonetheless, he is an extremely skilled player and should be a decent fill in option for the Leafs, as they look to distance themselves from other teams in the playoff hunt.
