Nazem Kadri to miss significant time due to injury

Mike Armenti   ·   11 février 2020
The surging Colorado Avalanche will be without the services of centre Nazem Kadri for the foreseeable future after the feisty forward reportedly suffered a lower-body injury in Sunday's matchup with the Minnesota Wild.

The Avs made up some serious ground in their pursuit of the St. Louis Blues in recent weeks, sitting just 3 points back of the defending Stanley Cup champs, with Colorado having two games-in-hand. The injury to Kadri has come at a very inopportune time, though I suppose there is never an opportune time for an injury to occur.

Though it's still too early to determine how long he will be out of the lineup, the Avalanche have not shut down Kadri for the remainder of the regular season, which is encouraging. At this time, the LBI is expected to keep the 29-year-old on the sidelines on a week-to-week basis.

Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar was on Altitude Sports 92.5 FM in Denver on Tuesday, at which time he revealed the prognosis.

"Kadri's going to miss some time here. He's going to be out indefinitely," he said. "He has a lower-body-injury, so we'll just keep re-evaluating him, but he's going to miss some time here." Bednar continued on to address how substantial the loss of Kadri would be for the team.

"I think that Kadri's a big loss. You've got a face-off guy, you got a power-play guy, you got a second-line centre down the middle that adds some experience and, like you said, that grit and sandpaper."

With 36 points in 51 games this season, the Avs sure are going to miss Kadri's production, but they still have plenty of tools in the toolbox to use at their disposal. Kadri's absence will also create an opening for someone like Joonas Donskoi or Valeri Nichushkin to see a little more powerplay time.

The Avs play host to the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday evening on the first game of a five-game homestand. We'll have a better idea of who will step up and take on a larger role in Kadri's absence during that stretch.
