Former teammate of Alex Galchenyuk discusses why he's struggling in the NHL

Tim Tucker   ·   12 février 2020
Now that Alex Galchenyuk has played his first game with the Minnesota Wild after being a piece oin the Jason Zucker trade earlier this week, he's now officially played with his fourth NHL team in three seasons. The once promising third overall draft pick has been struggling in recent years and the constant change of scenery doesn't seem to be helping much. In fact, a former teammate of his says he wouldn't be at all surprised if Galchenyuk wasn't playing in the NHL next season.

P.A. Parenteau played with Galchenyuk in Montreal in 2014-15, Galchenyuk's third full year at the NHL level. While many have wondered whether Galchenyuk's issues stem from attitude problems, Parenteau told TVA Sports that he doesn't believe that's the case.

"I'm not surprised (that he was traded again)", admitted Parenteau. "He is a good kid and I was lucky to be around him, but I think his game is suffering a little. There is a lot of speed in the NHL and I don't think he is a great skater. He's not a bad player, but when confidence starts to be affected and you realize that you may not have the speed to play at this level or be successful there, it is what it is. "

"We thought maybe his hockey IQ or his shot could compensate for his lack of speed, but you have to skate today," added Parenteau. "The decisions he makes on the ice are questionable. It is not an attitude problem."

"He is at a crossroads," said Parenteau. "I will not be surprised if he is no longer in the NHL next year."

Seth Rorabaugh, a reporter covering the Pittsburgh Penguins, echoed Parenteau's sentiments on attitude following Galchenyuk's trade to Minnesota.

"With Alex Galchenyuk, I can't say I've ever seen a player work so hard for so little success," Rorabaugh posted on Twitter. "He would work on little things after practice - bank plays off boards or crossovers - to the point of exhaustion. And all it led to was five goals."

While it is a very small sample size, Galchenyuk's first game with the Wild didn't produce encouraging results for him. He was used sparingly, getting 12:26 of ice time, including 2:29 on the powerplay. He failed to register on the scoresheet.
